Who Can Do an Autism Evaluation

Autism evaluations cannot be done by a regular primary care physician, regular pediatrician or home visitor. To be accepted by government services and health insurance an evaluation must be completed by a Developmental Pediatrician (usually only up to age 5), Psychologist, Neuropsychologist or Psychiatrist. Other licensed therapists can become certified to do an evaluation, but these might not be accepted by government services or insurance. 

For adults, some find self-diagnosis to be enough to provide the framework they need to begin accommodating for and learning about their brain. For all Autism Society programming we consider self- diagnosis valid, and we welcome you with open arms. However, be aware that self-diagnosis will not work to acquire services through insurance and government agencies. 

How to Get an Evaluation 

1) Contact your insurance and see if they will cover an evaluation and what the referral requirements are. 

2) Wait times can be very long ( 6 months to a year) so we recommend calling all of the providers who match your insurance and age requirements and getting on as many waitlists as possible.
